Two world wars and the end of empire diminished its role, but the UK remains a major economic and military power, with considerable political and cultural influence around the world.

Britain was the world's first industrialised country.

A Grã-Bretanha já foi descrita como uma grande e orgulhosa nave, empenhada historicamente em distanciar-se da Europa. Na realidade, apesar de seu "esplêndido isolamento", o Reino Unido sempre esteve estreitamente ligado aos destinos do continente, o que não o impediu de cimentar sua grandeza num imenso império colonial e no domínio de todos os mares. Maior potência mundial no século XIX, conservou posteriormente seu orgulho e parte de seu esplendor, embora já não se possa dizer que "quando há névoa no canal, o continente fica isolado".

According to wikipedia Tie-dye is a process of tying and dyeing a piece of fabric or cloth which is made from knit or woven fabric, usually cotton; typically using bright colors. It is a modern version of traditional dyeing methods used in many cultures throughout the world. "Tie-dye" can also describe the resulting pattern or an item which Tie-dyeing is accomplished by folding the material into a pattern, and binding it with string or rubber bands. Dye is then applied to only parts of the material. The ties prevent the entire material from being dyed. Designs are formed by applying different colors of dyes to different sections of the wet fabric. A wet t-shirt is much easier to dye than a dry t-shirt. Once complete, the material is rinsed, and the dye is set.

De acordo com Wikipédia o Tie Dye é uma antiga técnica, tradicionalmente utilizada por várias culturas no mundo, especialmente asiáticas e africanas. No Japão, onde a técnica é conhecida como shibori, os mais antigos exemplares desse tipo de tingimento datam do século VI ao século VIII.

Contemporaneamente, o tie-dye teve um ápice entre as décadas de 1960 e 1970, entre adeptos do movimento hippie. Nos Estados Unidos, foi popularizado por músicos como John Sebastian, Janis Joplin, The Grateful Dead e Joe Cocker.
